Converting a practice management database to Bp Premier

This article provides information for practices considering migrating their clinical database from an existing practice management software system to Best Practice Software's Bp Premier. Best Practice Software can also assist practices who are merging one or more Bp Premier databases, for example, if a company has acquired a second practice, or is consolidating their practice management software across the organisation.

Who do I contact?

Conversions from other practice management software and merges of separate Bp Premier datasets are handled through a dedicated Conversions team. To initiate the conversion process, please contact Best Practice Software Sales at sales@bpsoftware.net. Our Sales team will contact you with documentation on how to use our custom conversion utility and an initial licensing quote.

What is the conversion utility?

The Bp Premier conversion utility can automate much of the database migration process for the following practice management packages:

  • Medical Director
  • Genie
  • ZedMed
  • Dataset merge from another Bp Premier database

The conversion utility is provided free of charge. The conversion process would be performed by your own staff or your IT services provider. However, Best Practice Software General Products Support provide as much assistance as possible via phone on 1300 40 1111 and email bpconversions@bpsoftware.net.

What if I use another practice management package? 

Best Practice Software are working on the utility to expand the number of packages for automated migration. However, you can also perform a custom migration. See Converting manually from another package for more information.

What does the conversion process involve?

Our Sales team will walk you through the conversion process after your email enquiry. Part of the preparation documentation will include a comprehensive Conversion Checklist, which you can view now.

The basic steps for conversion include: checking data integrity and currency; running a trial version; preparing for Go Live; converting; and data verification and 'cleanup'. Our Sales team will provide you with a checklist of dates and activities to step you through the process.

We run a seven-day clinic with little downtime

Best Practice Software software understand that seven-day clinic conversions require extra planning. Running a conversion on a live system while your practice is operational can cause the conversion to fail or the system to run very slowly. You also can’t enter data into the live system during conversion.

Best Practice Software's experienced conversion team can talk to you and your IT staff about available options and tailor a plan to suit your practice. For example, if you can nominate your quietest period, it might be possible to take manual notes during the conversion period. Or you could enter notes into a temporary Bp Premier database and import those notes after conversion.

Converting manually from another package

Manual conversions can be performed for other practice management software packages, such as:

  • Monet
  • Practix
  • ProMedicus
  • Surgiware
  • RXMedical
  • CSS
  • Compudoc.

However, software that cannot be migrated through the utility will require a custom solution, such as a tailored database script, or an import of patient demographics with some manual transcribing of clinical information. An experienced database administrator or your IT services provider may be able to assist with a custom database migration. Best Practice Software is unable to provide assistance with custom database migration scripts.
